A Time for Inspiration
It’s time to allow the best and the brightest of the next generation to inspire us. This issue features Chief Investment Officer’s latest class of 40 Under 40 rising stars in the industry. Some made it onto our list right under the wire, turning 40 shortly after
our April 1, 2017 cutoff.
A few are actually already CIOs, such as Jason Raiti, 33, who was named CIO of
Choate Rosemary Hall in 2016. He came from Eastman Kodak in Rochester, New
York, where he had direct oversight for the company’s $5 billion benefit pension assets.
Others have overcome great hardships, such as Matthew Sherwood, who is
perhaps one of the most inspiring young people in our industry due to the hurdles he
has overcome. Sherwood was working for a hedge fund when he suddenly became blind
due to past football injuries. It didn’t deter him from reinventing himself, however. He
completed his Ph.D. and returned to the industry as a senior investment analyst for
public markets at Manhattan-based MMBB.
This year we added an anonymous survey to our 40 Under 40 coverage to see what
would keep these talents at their jobs. We thought you might find it useful.
This is also the issue in which we name our top Knowledge Brokers. The annual
list is compiled through CIO interviews and industry experts, and Bailey McCann,
researcher and author of Tactical Portfolios: Strategies and Tactics for Investing in Hedge Funds
& Liquid Alternatives, brings us the most influential investment consultants of the year.
There were also quite a few topics on our to-do list. We couldn’t resist exploring
litigation investing, which became a necessary dive due to its potential for 20% returns.
Veteran business journalist Joanne Cleaver brings the story to life. Also in this issue,
Jennifer Waters finds what real estate investments look promising to asset owners, Mark
Romeo approached an LDI topic that could give CIOs leverage, Poonka Thangavelu
reports back from the Sohn investors’ conference and Eric Laursen researches how the
flows into passive allocations are changing the market, and whether smart beta can
heal the rift.
2017 Industry Innovation Awards—Nominations Are Open
We all know someone who is changing this industry for the better. They’re often lighting
up a room with invigorating ideas or finding an energizing way to lead. We are looking
for your nominations as we begin our search for the finest CIOs and asset managers, to
be announced at our eighth annual Chief Investment Officer Industry Innovation Awards
on December 7. You may make your nominations at www.ai-cio.com. The nominations
are open to all, and we’re seeking those who are keeping this industry fresh with their
ingenuity, work ethos or example. We’re also adding new categories this year and the
nomination form will be on our website until August 5.
Our advisory committee, Jagdeep Bachher of University of California Office
of the President, Tim Barrett of Texas Tech University System, Robert Hunkeler
of International Paper, Jacque Millard of Intermountain Healthcare, and Mark
Schmid of University of Chicago will be helping CIO to hone our final list of winners.
The event will kick off at the Harvard Club with a half-day forum, and crescendo
with a glittery awards bash at the New York Public Library, which attracts over 400
of the industry’s finest. We encourage you to send in the names of those who are
inspiring you most this year as soon as you can. We’re hoping to be your magazine of
choice as you (hopefully) have the opportunity to kick back for some much needed R&R
this summer. Enjoy. See you in the fall. —Christine Giordano, Editor
